Ben Nicholls & Tim Eriksen Corydon

A song I learned from Amelia Clark's copy of the American Vocalist, 1848, after I found it for $3 at a local flea market over 30 years ago. From the Ben Nicholls album Duets on Hudson Records.

I had a great time in NW Arkansas: shapenote singing school, all day singing and an intimate solo show. The singing was strong, and I it was great to make some noise with friends old and new, including Dan Brittain again who I hadn't sung with since 2016 in Warsaw. Many thanks to Allison Langston, for everything including shooting this on her phone, and to everyone who came out.

Tim Eriksen in the Secret Garden HD
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
Here's a selection of Songs From The Secret Garden, a UK production from a while back. I learned Sandy Boys from Dwight Diller, but I suspect he'd say I rock and rolled it, and that it should be more of a march. The second tune is an actual march, or was used that way once people got it out of the opera Atalanta by Handel, who I'd think probably got the tune off some other people in the first p...
Tim Eriksen Little Margaret in Bosa Sardinia HD

Filmed by Anja Eriksen. I've been singing this for a long time. It has a good enough tune and a bit of poignancy around regret. I don't know how useful it is to have songs like this, but I guess it illustrates some familiar stuff. As Josh Billings Jr was supposedly fond of saying "just cuz there aint no spirits don't mean they won't haunt you."
Tim Eriksen Banjo at S'Archittu Sea Caves HD

Filmed by Luka Eriksen and Beau Guenther. I believe the tune is "Going Across The Sea," played on Bill Dunn's banjo in preparation for a little show at Casa Bagnolo in Milis, Sardegna.
Tim Eriksen - Shep Jones Hornpipe/Making a Stone Axe
Просмотров 838Год назад
Shep Jones was a local character who played fiddle for dances around Stony Brook Harbor in a community whose other notable fiddlers included "Black Tony" Clapp whose grave I remember visiting when I was about 8 for some reason, and William Sidney Mount who even designed one he called the "cradle of harmony" with a concave back, supposed to made it louder. His painting Dance of the Haymakers see...

"Hallelujah" at the Pinnacles Tim Eriksen and friends
Просмотров 1 тыс.Год назад
I went for a walk up in The Pinnacles with my friends Gerald Clark, Allison Steel and Allison Langston the morning after a pretty amazing concert at Berea College in which we sang a bunch of shapenote tunes associated with the 19th century Abolition movement, along with Mat Callahan, Yvonne Moore and a stunning group of singers organized and led by Dr. Kathy Bullock. You can watch "Songs and Sl...

Filmed at Anglin Falls in Berea KY. We were in Berea for a remarkable convocation event at the college, celebrating the book, CD and film Songs of Slavery and Abolition, which we took part in filming and recording in 2018. We did our part at the David Ruggles Center in Florence, MA though much of the rest of it was done at the college. ruclips.net/video/HmytdAYr-s0/видео.html Mear, 49b in the S...
Tim Eriksen- The Southern Girl's Reply
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Год назад
Pretty soon after I picked up the fiddle, around the end of the war in Bosnia, I learned this from the wildly under appreciated Jeff Davis, although I already kind of knew it from Anne and Frank Warner's recording of Rebecca King Jones of Cape Hatteras NC that I got from Peter Kennedy in Gloucester, England ca. 1988. Lots of long stories. The words first appeared in a newspaper in 1863 when peo...
Tim Eriksen SH 106 Remembering Bill Dunn
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
We had our first all day singing since March 2020 over in Chatham today. We had an extended memorial lesson for all those we lost over the past two years. It's been weird to not be able to sing properly for people. My voice finally feels normal after singing from about 9:30-3:30. I was pretty tired when I got back, but I went out to the woods tonight to make a video for Bill, on his banjo which...
Friendship- Tim Eriksen in the Colorado Rockies

Here's this song again, this time on the drive between Paonia and Boulder Colorado. I was in Colorado for back shows that were about as different as they get. Friday night in Boulder I did two performances of Follow the Birds, a suite of original and traditional songs and improvisation by a really remarkable nine piece band including hardanger, bass clarinet, amplified trumpet, laptop, home mad...

I started writing this over 30 years ago but, as simple as it is, it's taken this long for me to feel like it's done. Several long stories are involved. A bunch of us got together this afternoon to sing recently written shapenote songs at Allison and Jan Erik's barn. It was cold but...

Tim Eriksen -John Colby's Hymn HD720 (2007)
Wow, hasta suena parecido al Láud Árabe :O
I love this
Great playing I love hearing that dulcimer. I love the tune itself. However regarding the words, this is an example of a tune that I choose to sing other words to. I think the symbolism of the song is off. Sort of like how lord of the rings has meaningful symbolism but Star Wars seems off to me .
Great job!!
Love this one, Tim. I still come back to it.
This is the day I was born haha
Are you a fraud or am I unimaginably dumb? Becuase no matter what I do my bowed banjo is absolutely not that loud. There's some audio trickery here, right? Or some different kind of sleight of hand?
Haha! Neither. Just practice, I guess
Wonderful baby
Thank you for honoring us with such a beautiful rendition of this song. Well done!
Thanks! I miss BiH
Wholly Cow!!

Man, youve got a ton of incredible music out over the years huh. Do you ever come around upstate NY?
Thanks! I do sometimes get to upstate New York, but the only thing on the calendar at the moment is a show with Tony Trischka in Albany in December
Cool song
Hallelujah
Broke my young heart... we gon be here all night?
Mr. Eriksen, I can't thank you enough for sharing these songs. Distress literally brought me to tears, and that's a very rare experience for me.
You're very welcome. I'm glad the song resonated- it's a great one!
great version. love the fast tempo. adds a beautiful shrill quality to it. also fun to see the kiddos playing in the background. the next generation of shape note singers :)
“Oh, sister dear, I can read your dream Read in it grief and sorrow. Your true love John, he lies dead and gone In the dewy dens of Yarrow.” She tore her hair around her hands All in grief and sorrow She tore a blue ribbon from out her hair That she had received in Yarrow Then over hill and over dale And through the streams so narrow, ‘Til she came upon her true love John, All dead and gone in Yarrow. Her hair it was three quarters long The color it was yellow. She tied it round his middle so small And she bore him home from Yarrow. “Oh, daughter dear, don’t weep and mourn All in grief and sorrow. I can marry you to a much nobler man Than the one you lost in Yarrow.” “Oh, father dear, you have seven sons, You can wed them each tomorrow. But the finest flower of them all Was the one I loved in Yarrow.”
Tim Eriksen is a national treasure.
Hillsong and Bethell cannot touch this.
Who’s Hillsong and Bethel?
lovely melody from Bonnie Blue
I'm teaching myself how to play this song on my violin 🎻
The closer I get, the truer it is.
Cello chills.
You have such a cool time and great control. Keep creating. Keep sharing.
I’ve been listening to you since 2004. Since I bought the 2 disc set of the movie Cold Mountain. Please keep the torch for the old ballads alive. In this ever increasing digital world. Thank you 🔥
Hey tim been a while, hope you’re doing well. Have you heard the American orthodox song “God is with us” it’s sung with Appalachian style so it says. I Thought it was you. Think you should give it a listen. Much love from the batfancy days 🦇
Hey, thanks for the note! I don't believe I know that one but I'll see if I can find it.
Just coming off the 2024 All-Cal, I enjoy hearing this. Thankfully, all my eagworms of the Smiths, Bert Jansch, The Beatles, verging on nausea, have been replaced with wondrous Sacred Harp chestnuts, all which I can recreate in 4-part harmony in my head.
Dulcimer tuning?
Sounds like E-B-B low to high
do you ever do up picking? i learned it from clifton hicks. its like claw hammer in its technique except on the bum stroke you use the pad of your finger to pluck the string. makes a song sound more like a drone king of sound if that makes sense
Almost note for note from Dwight Diller’s version…and none the worse for that. I learned it the same way a dozen years ago and it’s ended up almost identical. I love the haunting tune.
Cool! That’s great to hear. I miss Dwight
This song is real music sitting on the porch and making sweet music ✌️❤️
i cant understand how you ply so fast and accurately like that. i can kinda double thumb at that speed but its very inconsistent. you have to be the best banjo player of the last century. your expression makes it look like this song isnt challenging for you at this speed. i couldent imagine what clawhammer song you couldent play on banjo. if a song was too hard for you id never be able to play it! been a t the banjo for a year got my banjo for lik 30 bucks from a fried. i had to repair the neck. its one of those cheap 100 dollar mulucky banjos. i put nylgut strings on it and made a few minor adjustments to the thead tension and it really sounds like one of the really old time banjos in tone. its amazing how a person can take a cheap instrument and pull sound out of it that would rival the high end stuff. i remember you once said the same thing about your violin that it was inexpensive and very loud and yet you still make it sound better and more old time than any other player ive heard. you are definitely a virtuoso at many instruments!
have you ever tried playing this on banjo. im a banjo player in the appalachia variety and id love to do this in the ky and va appalachian style. where can i find this tune or did you write it
Deo vindice.
Your recordings of Amazing Grace and Wayfaring Stranger encouraged me to learn to play old-time banjo. It's going well, I booked a few theatre gigs. Thank you for inspiring me, it's really wonderful to listen to this on loop as I wind down for the night.
That’s great to hear! Thanks
I am reading a book called Airman and was wondering if a song mentioned in it was real, I still won't know if this is what it was ment to be but I enjoyed listening to it as I read. Beautiful song and performance
So all this just for the church to burn down, then Daniel, Taylor, John and Angela all died in the ruined house, then I found out nobody actually died up untill Anthony killed himself. What a game.
Insane
That is so awesome and beautiful ❤
Best rendition I've ever heard. Gives me strong feelings.
Isn't Riley Baugus a member of the Tillers?
I don’t know- he plays with a lot of people
Great ending haha
They’re all grown up now, apparently no worse for the wear
❤
My favorite was the young lady at 27:16. She walked the floor with sweeping gestures and a voice above all the others. It was great.
I always like seeing people that obviously REALLY enjoy participating in music.
So i learned that Hurdy Gurdy's were the original Catholic Church instrument before organs became popular, that's why these big versions exist they were meant to play in churches for worship music.
